Posted this on the 98 forum, but some potential Cutlass content, so I'll post here too.

Was prepping for a carb rebuild and I discovered that my 1970 98 has a manual transmission carburetor. According to the code stamped on the carb, I have a 7040253 (455 with manual tranny) when I would have expected a 7040250 (455 with auto).

What are the differences between these carbs? Were they interchangeable? Did someone put a Cutlass carb on my 98, or did the factory do this? Will rebuild kits be the same?

Besides any internal differences, I believe the automatic version had a dashpot so that the engine wouldn't die when the throttle was closed quickly. These were usually external, but I'm not familiar with your model.

The list here says the 7040253 was used for a MT 442 (about 1/3 way down the page)...

...This list may be different for 98's...You can also see the difference in the internals.
